April Gardening Tips

April is always a busy month here at Bellis Brothers Garden Centre, with lots of beautiful new plants arriving in our outdoor plant area. It’s not just your prized plants that are starting to show life, the weeds spring into action too, so there are plenty of jobs to keep you busy.

• Enrich borders with compost, fertilizer and damp peat.
• Sow hardy annual seeds.
• April is the month for planting summer flowering bulbs like dahlias, gladiolas and lilies.
• Divide perennials such as Hostas, Daylilies, Delphiniums, Daisies, and Phlox.
• There still is time to plant trees and shrubs.
• It is the ideal month for pruning evergreens.
• Any containerised plants need plenty of fertiliser and frequent watering, especially during warm weather.
• Prune spring blooming shrubs after they have completed flowering
• Apply a spring ‘feed & weed’ treatment to your lawn to improve color & appearance
• Neaten up edges of your lawn
• April is a great time to select and plant fruit trees and berry plants.
• Begin a programme of weed control.
