September

Chores now start to increase again as Autumn is not far away.

Autumn-leaves-and-grass

  • Now is a great time to plant trees, shrubs, perennials, grass seeds & spring flowering bulbs such as snowdrops and daffodils.
  • Annual flowers like sweet peas can be kept going by constantly picking the flowers and removing any that are going to seed.
  • Overgrown perennials can now be divided.
  • Dead-head roses and trim back tall stems
  • Force hyacinth and narcissi bulbs for Christmas.
  • Net ponds to stop leaves falling in.
  • Now is a good time to give your lawn some attention, repairs can be made or a new lawn could be sown from seed this month.
  • Winter lettuce can be sown.
  • Early fruit & vegetables can be harvested when ready.
  • When your strawberry plants have finished fruiting, cut all the leaves off to the ground, clear away the leaves and stems and top dress around the plants.
  • Hardwood cuttings can be taken of blackcurrants and gooseberries.
