August 2019 News From The Farm

The Pick Your Own has now finished. Thank you to all those that came down and supported us. The picking team will now prune raspberries and weed crops ready for next season. They will then finish with us and we hope to see them again next year. August is when our full time farm staff can take a well-earned break. On the theme of Pick Your Own our Pumpkin crop is growing well ready for you to return to the fields in October.

The new season’s potato harvest is just about to get underway with the tops ready to be burnt off and the crops harvested in early September. The first variety of potato will be Marfona followed in the early autumn by Wilja and Picasso. It looks like we will have a bumper onion crop this year, they will be ready to harvest by the end of the month and then will be left to dry before being bagged.

We will also be harvesting successive crops of cauliflower and broccoli right up to Christmas or the first really cold spell of weather, whichever happens first. Sprouts are looking like they will be a good crop again this year too. Currently available in the Farm Shop and homegrown in our fields are broccoli, summer cabbage, hispi cabbage, strawberries and raspberries. For the first time this year we will have our own raspberries available for longer as we have a later crop which has been grown in our poly tunnels.

We hope to open the maize maze in the next week or so weather dependent. We hope it will be lots of fun for our younger customers during the remainder of the school holidays. Please see our website for further details.
