August 2016 News From The Farm

Maize-maze-largeOur maize maze should be opening very soon and we hope it will be lots of fun for our younger customers during the remainder of the school holidays.

Pick your own usually closes this month after a season of excellent fruit and quite testing weather. The picking team will start pruning raspberries in the middle of this month ready for next season, they will then finish until they are needed next year. Most of the members of our farm team will have a holiday this month before we start catching up with routine maintenance.

The pumpkin crop is growing well ready for Halloween, with three times more than last year planted. The new seasons potato harvest is just getting underway with Marfona ready first, followed in the early autumn by Picasso and Mozart. The onion crop will be ready to harvest by the end of the month. Our early carrots need another month of growing time. We will also be harvesting successive crops of cauliflower and broccoli right upto Christmas or the first really cold spell of weather, whichever happens first.

We have just started cutting some leafy spring cabbage and the sprouts should be ready by Christmas! The last of the cauliflower plants will go in at the beginning of August. These are for cutting next April. The asparagus fern is growing well so the crowns should be full of energy for next spring.
