August 2017 News From The Farm

Our maize maze is open now and we hope it will be lots of fun for our younger customers during the remainder of the school holidays.

Pick your own has finished now due to the early start this year. We have had an excellent season of fruit and another very busy pick your own. The picking team will prune raspberries this month ready for next season and then will finish for the season until they are needed next year. August is the time for a few of the farm staff to have a holiday  before we start catching up on routine maintenance.

New for this year, we have planted dwarf sunflowers around the maize maze which will  grow to about 1.5 metres, they should be ready at the end of this month and sold in the Farm Shop.

The Pumpkin crop is growing well ready for pick your own pumpkins, they are keeping the farm staff busy as they need lots of weeding this year as the fields seem to be particularly dry and weedy. This year we have grown our own new potatoes, which are available in the Farm Shop now. The new seasons potato harvest is just getting underway with Marfona ready first, followed in the early autumn by Picasso and Mozart. The onion crop will be ready to harvest by the end of the month. Our early carrots will need another month of growing time. We will also be harvesting successive crops of cauliflower and broccoli right upto Christmas or the first really cold spell of weather, whichever happens first.

Looking forward the asparagus fern is growing well so the crowns should be full of energy for next spring.
