April 2015 News From The Farm

We will be planting some more ‘ever bearer’ strawberries on the table top. These will be berries that we pick from August to October, we like to replace the plants every two years. We may start planting strawberries in the field at the end of this month if it is warm enough. We will also be looking for signs of growth from the rhubarb, blackcurrants and raspberries that we planted in February.

If the soil dries out and warms up quickly we will be able to start planting cauliflowers and cabbage and possibly even potatoes at the end of the month. We will also be sowing the onion seeds.

The onions from last year are now finished and we only have about 4 tonnes of potatoes left in store and about 3 weeks supply of carrots left in the field. It’s a race between us and the slugs as to who gets them first.

The Savoy and Tundra are coming to an end but there are still plenty of white cabbages. All the red cabbages that were in store have now been sold.

We should start picking purple sprouting broccoli in the next week or so. Over wintered cauliflowers may also be ready by the end of the month.

A few lambs have been spotted on our tenanted fields.
